BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The BGSU women's track and field team will conclude their indoor track season this weekend at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The championship will take place at the Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti, Michigan. After finishing eighth at the All-Ohio Championships the Orange and Brown had a week to recover and prepare for the championship.
"We have continued to be fairly consistent," said head coach Cami Wells "Last weekend, we certainly hoped to finish a little higher but we had some things happen, with losing batons and people getting knocked down in race and having a few runners sick. Certainly those things are going to come up in a season, but you don't think they will happen all in one meet. That was somewhat disappointing because it's out of our control. There were certainly things I thought we can control that we could have done better at in the All-Ohio Championships, but it was a good wake up call before the MAC Championships. It lets everyone know that they have to be at their best, to put themselves in a position to score points".
Some of the Falcons' best times and marks came at the All-Ohio Championships even though those efforts were not reflected in the scoring. The third, fourth and fifth best shot put throws came at the All-Ohio event. Senior Liz Honegger earned her best mark of the year with a toss of 13.75 meters. TaKarra Dunning earned her third best mark of the indoor season with a mark of 13.87 meters and junior teammate Whitney Hartman had her best toss of the season with a mark of 13.96 meters. Hartman also excelled in the weight throw with her best throw of the season with a mark of 18.58 meters.
"We have seen good competition throughout the season but certainly not the depth that was at the All-Ohio Championships," said Wells. "We had a few instances where we were just a spot or two from scoring and certainly with a young team like ours, they learn those things along the way".
Overall the Falcons brought home a seventh place finish in the one mile run, a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run, a seventh place finish in the 3,000 meter run, a sixth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, a third place finish in the distance medley, an eighth place finish in the pole vault, a third place finish in the long jump, a fourth, fifth, and sixth place finish in the shot put and a third place and seventh place finish in the weight throw.
A few notables for the All-Ohio Championships: Sabrina Forstein turned in her third best pole vault height with a mark of 3.41 meters. Megan Kelsey turned in the fifth best time for the Falcons in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19.33. Danielle Thornton ran the fastest time for the Falcons in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:01.09. Lyndi Springer turned in her third best time of the season in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:17.44. Freshman Barbara Powers turned in the second best time for the Falcons in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:26.10, and Kara Butler turned in the fifth best time for the Falcons in the same event with a time of 10:34.39. The 4x400 meter relay which was comprised of Powers, Heather Conger, Springer and Jamie Roflow turned in the best time in the Falcons indoor season with a time of 4:02.73. Roflow also turned in her second best time in the one mile run with a time of 5:08.31. Shantell Lewis ran the second best time for the Falcons in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.85 seconds.
"I'm happy with the effort that everyone has given, and am comfortable with the position we are in going into the conference championships," said Wells. "The MAC is really competitive with twelve schools, so it's going to be a tight race between all of the schools. Once you get at the championships, the scoring is based on event to event, and where your strengths are and where you can score points".
