BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team downed the University at Buffalo Bulls 74-47 on Saturday afternoon inside Anderson Arena. With the win the Orange and Brown clinch at least a tie for first overall in the Mid-American Conference, their fourth-straight conference regular season championship.
With the loss, the Bulls not only drop to an even 14-14 on the season (7-8 MAC), but also fall one game short of completing the MAC East road sweep; prior to tonight, Buffalo had beaten every MAC East team in their own arena.
Bowling Green is 23-6 this season including a 12-3 showing in the MAC. The Falcons are also guaranteed to finish with a 20 win season and ten or less defeats for the fifth consecutive season. Seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor, who were recognized prior to the game, earned their 105th win with the Falcons and are 105-21 all time with the Orange and Brown - the two are also guaranteed to loose less than 25 games throughout their collegiate careers.
Speaking of Achter, the senior finished her last game in Anderson Arena with 24 points including 14 in the first half and 10 in the second. In what was a `low' outing for the senior, she also tossed only seven assists. Taylor, on the other hand, was 3-5 from the floor contributing six points and a defensive rebound. Each was pulled in the final minutes of play and given a standing ovation by the 1,906 fans in attendance.
The Falcons, who were tied 4-4 with the Bulls at the 18:23 mark, used a 17-0 run to break the game open 21-4 by 11:54 and never looked back. Through that run, Tara Breske scored eight of her 11 points. Bowling Green's defense held Buffalo without a field goal for 6:29 through that BG run.
Though the Falcons would increase their lead to 19 by 8:36, UB senior Heather Turner netted a team high six points as the Bulls strung together a 9-2 comeback and were within 10 points of the hosts, 27-17 due in part to a Jessica Fortman steal and lay-up. Turner would finish with a team high 18 points.
Achter's second three of the night, she would hit a career high two, pushed the Falcons ahead 13 at 3:58 only to have teammate Jen Uhl convert a free throw followed by a Lindsey Goldsberry lay-up in the paint to quickly increase the advantage back to 16 points with 2:30 remaining in the half.
By half time, the Falcons were ahead 40-18 and were outscoring the Bulls 18-10 in the paint and 14-4 off the opponents' turnovers (13-4). Turner led the Bulls with seven points going 3-of-4 from the free throw line and 2-of-6 from the field. At the intermission, Achter led BGSU with her 14 points going 5-of-6 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the arc and free throw line. Breske added 10 of her own while Goldsberry slipped in seven.
In yet another run, Buffalo began the second half cutting the lead back to 15 points by 15:47, but once again the Falcons put on a scoring show of their own and would keep a mid-to-high 20 point range for the remainder of the game.
The Orange and Brown, who have clinched a first round bye in the upcoming MAC Tournament, will have one game remaining on the regular season schedule as they travel to Akron, Ohio on Wednesday afternoon. The final regular season game is set to start at 7:00 p.m. in Rhodes Arena.
*FALCON NOTES*
*Bowling Green won the points in the paint brawl out scoring Buffalo 42-26 inside the lane. The Falcons 42 paint points were just five less than the entire Buffalo scoring effort.
*In Anderson Arena, Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor will graduate with a 28-4 home record in league play and a 41-4 overall record. The two average 10.25 home wins per year and saw one undefeated season as sophomores (11-0).
*With her 24 point outing, the Falcons move to 12-2 all-time when Achter scores 20-plus points. She also joined Breske and Lauren Prochaska for a double-digit outing - the Falcons are 8-1 when that happens.
