HAMILTON, Ohio - Host Miami University remained unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play with a 6-1 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 11). The MAC dual match was held at the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton, Ohio.
With the win, the RedHawks improve to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in MAC duals. The Falcons drop to 14-3 and 3-3, respectively.
The Brown and Orange opened the match by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, but the hosts captured each of the six singles matches en route to the victory.
Senior co-captains Andrea Volle and Jenna Nussbaum picked up one of BG's doubles wins, as did the team of junior Libby Harrison and sophomore Katia Babina. The seniors won by an 8-4 outcome at the second flight, while the Babina/Harrison duo captured an 8-6 decision.
In singles action, junior Kelsey Jakupcin won the first set of her match against Anastasia Dracheva at the top flight, but Dracheva was able to rebound to capture the second and third sets.
In flight-three competition, Babina and MU's Leda Pesatova battled to a deadlock through two sets, before Pesatova forged past Babina with a 6-3 win in the decisive set.
Nussbaum battled Megan Martzolf to a tiebreaker in the second set, but Martzolf won that 'breaker to take that fourth-flight contest.
Brintney Larson, Kelly Douple and Victoria Pulido each won in straight sets for the RedHawks, who remain tied with Western Michigan at the top of the MAC standings. The RedHawks and Broncos will take identical 6-0 league records into a Saturday (April 12) match in Southwest Ohio.
For the Falcons, the road portion of the season ends Saturday with a dual match at Ball State. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
