BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - As the 2007-08 academic year comes to a close on the campus of Bowling Green State University, the men's soccer Falcons have taken the time to make their mark in the greater Bowling Green community. Once a week, for the past three weeks, the team has completed community service projects including cleaning their adopted stretch of I-75 and volunteering at Crim Elementary School.
"I am proud of the team and the effort they have put into giving back to the community," said head coach Fred Thompson. "The city of Bowling Green supports the athletic department year-round; it is only fitting that we can return that support in order to thank all parties involved. Plus, these have been great activities to get the boys together away from the training field."
The month was kicked-off with a visit to Crim Elementary where the team interacted with the students facilitating and participating in various games as a part of the Crim Carnival. The evening gathering allowed the team to laugh with some of their youngest supporters.
The soccer Falcons also spent time along I-75 cleaning a two-mile stretch that leads into the city of Bowling Green. The Falcons, donning safety vests and work boots, participated in their annual Adopt-A-Highway clean-up. To date more than 1,400 groups around the state participate in the program.
"Cleaning that area of I-75 is something the team has done for as long as I can remember and might even date back as long as a decade. It is a humbling experience and costs the team nothing more than our time."
Recently, the Falcons ended their spring competition schedule with a 2-0-4 record. The fall season will begin in August with pre-season camp while games are expected to begin later that month or in early September.
