BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will travel to Kent, Ohio on Apr. 26 to compete in the First Energy Intercollegiate, hosted by Kent State. The 36-hole event is the final tune-up prior to the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Different Format
The First Energy Intercollegiate will feature a format that allows six golfers to participate, counting the top five scores. This is different from the normal play five golfers, counting the top four rounds.
Last Time Out
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team climbed two spots on the final day of competition at the 2008 Rutherford Intercollegiate to finish sixth. The Falcons, who carded a 914 (302-295-317) in the 54-hole competition, placed three golfers in the top-23 of the 66-person field.
Leading the way was senior Jace Walker, who finished in a tie for 15th. The St. Thomas, Ont., native carded a 54 hole score of 227 (77-73-77). Also finishing in the top-third of the field were a pair of sophomores in John Powers and Matt Schneider. Powers fired a 228 (78-71-79) to finish in a tie for 18th, while Schneider's 229 (78-72-79) placed him in a tie for 23rd.
Rounding out the Falcon competitors were Trevor Spathelf (234, T-43rd) and Russell Goodwin (238 (T-54th).
Walker Closes In on Winger
Senior Jace Walker is averaging 72.96 strokes a round this season, tops in the conference according to www.mac-sports.com. Not only does that 72.96 lead all golfers in the MAC, that average is currently the second lowest ever in a season by a Falcon, trailing only current men's head coach Garry Winger, who averaged 72.4 strokes a round in 1994. Winger, who also owns the lowest-ever career average at BGSU with a 75.00 may have to surrender that record, as Walker is nipping on his heals. The St. Thomas, Ontario native has played in 117 rounds, carding 8,765 stroke in his career for a 74.91 career average.
Up Next
Following the trip to Kent State the Falcons will participate in the 2008 MAC Championships the following week (May 2-4).
