Now, Thats a Tune-up!
In their final tune-up before the MAC Championships, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team came into Tuesday's final round with a three shot lead at the 2008 Falcon Invitational, a lead they would not need. The Falcons carded a final round 317, nine strokes better then the nearest competitor, en route to 15 stroke victory.
The Falcons fired a 54-hole score of 946, 15 strokes ahead of runner-up Siena (961). Fellow Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio finished third (981).
This is the third tournament victory for the Orange and Brown in the last three years. In 2006 the Falcons won the YSU/Taco Bell Invite and in 2005 they won the St. George Invitational.
Individually the Falcons were led by a pair of seniors in Carley Hrusovsky (80-75-78) and Jessica McCann (80-76-77). Both shot 54-hole scores of 233 en route to tournament medalist, their first tournament victory for both seniors in their second-to-last tournament of their careers. Freshman Lauren Glew was just four shots of the senior duo, carding a 237 (75-80-82). Glew finished in a tie for fourth.
Seniors Lindsey Jonkhoff (243, T-7th) and Amanda Bader (256, T-17th) also competed for the Falcons top squad.
McCann Impressive In Her Final Year
Senior Jessica McCann is saving her best for last, averaging 79.29 strokes through 24 rounds this season. In fact, her current season average is the second-lowest ever by a Falcon, trailing only Jenny Schnipke's 78.54 stroke average in the 2003-04 season.
Falcons Just as Impressive
The 2002-03 team average of 324.05, the current BGSU lowest team average in school history, is in jeopardy of being broken by this year's squad. Through 24 rounds, the 2007-08 Falcons have a 322.67 stroke average, with just the MAC Championships remaining.
Hrusovsky and McCann Named co-MAC Golfers of the Week
Seniors Carley Hrusovsky and Jessica McCann, members of the Bowling Green State University women's golf team, were named co-Mid-American Conference Golfers of the Week, after each shot 54-hole scores of 233 at the 2008 BGSU Falcon Invitational, en route to the individual tournament victory.
The senior duo also helped the Falcons to their first tournament victory of the season, helping the Falcons card a 54-hole score of 946, 15 strokes better then the nearest competitor.
Hrusovsky's 233 opened with an 80-75 and closed with a final round 78. The 75 matched the low round of the entire tournament. McCann, who trailed Hrusovsky by one stroke entering the final round, opened with 80-76, but shot 77 in her final 18 holes to match Hrusovsky's score.
