TOLEDO, Ohio - The Falcons extending their winning streak to six games over arch-rival Toledo with a 4-3 win on Saturday (April 26). With the victory the Falcons move to 14-20 overall and 11-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
Junior hurler Hayley Wiemer picked up her 11th win of the season and ninth of the season in league play remaining undefeated in the MAC with the most wins and fewest losses.
Wiemer dominated from the circle once again for the Falcons as she kept the Rockets scoreless in the first six innings, only giving up one hit. Wiemer pitcher her ninth complete game of the season and sixth in MAC play, tying her season high eight strike outs and walking only one batter.
The Falcons on the other hand jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Dawnjene DeLong was hit by Toledo's pitcher Hannah Rockhold. Rockhold then walked Wiemer and BG's clean up hitter Allison Vallas to load the bases. Rockhold then threw a wild pitch with DeLong scoring and Wiemer and Vallas both advancing, putting the Falcons on the score board first, 1-0.
The Falcons were kept scoreless in the second and third inning but got their bats going in the top of the fourth. Emily Gouge got things started with a lead-off base-on-balls. Lindsay Arney came in to pinch run for Gouge with Missy Bowman laying down a sacrifice bunt to move Arney to second. With Arney in scoring position Katelynn Boso stepped up to the plate and blasted a rocket to left center for a two-run homer, her second homer of the season, giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead over Toledo.
Toledo came back in the bottom of the fourth with their first hit of the game, a lead-off triple to right center. However, Wiemer and the Falcon defense once again kept the Rockets scoreless as the next three Toledo batters grounded out with BG's second basemen Haleigh Bielstein making a diving play to get the third out for the Falcons and end the inning.
The Falcons scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning as Gouge led-off crushing a triple of the center field wall, her first career triple. Bowman came up to the plate and hit a line drive down the third base line to score Gouge, extending the Falcons lead once again, 4-0. Boso kept the offense rolling with a single up the middle, but the Falcons would have to settle for one run in the sixth.
Once again the Falcons retired the Rockets one, two, three in the bottom of the sixth.
Going into the bottom of the seventh inning the Falcons were leading the Rockets, 4-0. The Falcon defense was able to get the first two outs with Wiemer striking out the lead-off batter and Arney making a great catch in center field, the illusive third out was harder to get. The Rockets rallied with five straight singles to come with one of the Falcons, 4-3 before Wiemer struck out her eighth batter of the game to give the Falcons the win.
The Falcon offense was led by DeLong hitting a perfect two-for-two with one run scored. Boso also recorded two hits against Toledo going two-for-three with a .667 batting average and a 1.667 slugging percentage, including a two-run homer, two RBIs and one run scored.
