DAYTON, Ohio - Cameron Hepple led the men's soccer Falcons in scoring as Bowling Green State University played to a pair of even spring training matches over the weekend on the campus of the University of Dayton. In addition to holding Dayton to a stalemate, the Falcons battled the University of Cincinnati to a 1-1 tie.
Both games consisted of two thirty-minute halves.
"Some people say that spring soccer doesn't count for anything but don't tell that to the players," said head coach Fred Thompson. "The players understand that it's an opportunity to showcase their development and to get the coaches thinking about where they might fit in when the fall rolls around.
"The level of intensity was considerably higher this weekend [ in comparison to last weekend's matches at home]. Playing against rival Ohio schools always makes for competitive matches whenever they are played. The games were combative and physical. With the weather this year, most teams have not been outside for long and I think that showed in the overall sharpness of play; not just from a technical stand point but also mentally. Still we had two good matches and two strong performances.
"We were never outplayed and our organization for this time of the year was as expected. If we were a little sharper in the final third we would have gotten two results. Again that's not unexpected for this time of year and it will continue to be an area of focus for us.
"Again we moved some players around with positive affect; the result being that we should have more flexibility and depth in the Fall."
BGSU will return to action on Sunday (Apr. 13), a date which was originally scheduled for Saturday, at Xavier University.
