ATHENS, Ohio - All the rain from Friday and early Saturday didn't put a damper on the Bowling Green State University baseball team and their offense, as the Falcons tied a school-record with eight homers on way to an 18-4 rout of the Ohio University Bobcats in game one of their three-game weekend series. The Saturday afternoon Mid-American Conference game was held at OU's Bob Wren Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons improved to 21-18 overall and 8-8 in the MAC, while the Bobcats dropped to 20-25 and 9-10, respectively.
A total of eight homers, by five different players would account for 15 of the Falcons' 18 runs on the day, as BG tied the school record of eight homers they had set just three weeks prior in game one at Ball State. Accounting for two each were Andrew Foster and Dennis Vaughn, as Foster went yard for the fourth and fifth times this season, while Vaughn went deep for the fourth and fifth times as well.
Vaughn led all Falcon hitters on the day, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a career-high five RBI, which all came with two outs. As a whole, 12 of the Falcons' 18 runs came with two outs, as BG hit 11-for-20 on the day with two outs on the board.
Every BG player in the starting lineup collected a hit as BG had seven players finish with multiple-hits, while six had multiple-RBI. Adding three RBI each were first baseman Brian Hangbers and shortstop Ryan Shay, who both finished 2-for-5 at the plate, accounting for three runs scored.
BG didn't waste any time getting the game's scoring started as they plated three runs in the top half of the first two innings, all via home runs. A solo homer to left field by Foster in the first gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead, while a two-run shot by Brandon McFarland to right center in the second made it 3-0 after two.
A Mark Galvin single in the top of the third then made it 4-0, which is where the score would remain till the home half of the fourth.
After Falcon starter Frank Berry allowed the Bobcats just four hits in the first three innings, OU finally broke his armor in the bottom of the fourth. OU scored three runs in the inning on an RBI-double by Gauntlett Eldemire, a passed ball that got by Ryan Schlater and an RBI-single by Zach Hartle to close with in one at, 4-3.
That would be as close as the Bobcats got though. BG countered with a five-spot in the fifth to climb out to 9-3 lead, before going on to out-score OU, 14-1, in the game's final five innings.
The highlight of the Falcons' fifth inning came on a three-run homer from Vaughn (his first of the two), who followed RBI hits from both Hangbers and Logan Meisler earlier in the inning. Hangbers later hit a two-run shot in the eighth after Galvin and Vaughn homered in the seventh.
Shay and Foster later brought the BG home run parade to an end in the ninth, as the Falcons recorded their third game this season with five or more homers.
Berry (5-1) would regain his control over the Bobcat hitters after the fourth, as he went on to earn his fifth win of the year. The Virginia Beach, Va. native went seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits, as he allowed just two walks. He was relieved in eighth by junior right-hander Marty Baird, who threw two scoreless innings, allowing zero OU hits with a strikeout.
Taking the loss for OU was right-handed starter Chris Rigo. Rigo (4-3) tossed seven full innings, allowing 12 runs on 12 hits, while he recorded five strikeouts.
Pacing OU at the plate was center fielder Matt Stiffler, who went 3-for-5 and accounted for one-run scored. Bradon Besl, Eldemire and Hartle picked up the three OU RBI.
BG finished the game with a 17-10 edge in hits, while they were aided in the field by two double plays that helped them strand seven OU runners.
The two squads will resume their three-game set on Sunday with games two and three, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. once again at Wren Stadium. Junior southpaw Kevin Light (2-3) will get the start in game two for the Falcons against Bobcat left-hander Zach Elmer (3-2).
