Wiemer, Vallas and MAC All-Star Team to Play USA Softball Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office announced today (June 11) that a team made up of All-MAC softball players will match up against the USA Softball team in an exhibition game on June 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Brookside Park in Ashland, Ohio as a part of the KFC 4 Beijing Tour.
The MAC squad will be compiled of 17 of the first and second team All-MAC players. Leading the MAC team will be University of Akron's head coach Julie Jones who will be assisted by her assistant coach Julie Pratt.
The BGSU softball program will be represented by first team All-MAC and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, Hayley Wiemer and Allison Vallas.

Wiemer, a junior Sylvania, Ohio native was named first team All-MAC for the third consecutive season, to the NFCA Great Lakes All-Region second team, ESPN the Magazine All-District first team and Academic All-MAC for the second straight season and was garnered with her first ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honor this season. She is a secondary education major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, the only player on the Academic All-MAC team and one of 10 on the Academic All-America teams to own a perfect 4.0 GPA. Wiemer takes care of business on the field as well as in the classroom leading the Falcons with a .637 slugging percentage and 11 homers, tying the BGSU season record she set in 2007, now second in career homers with 23 only three shy of tying the BGSU career record. Wiemer is the only Falcon in program history to post two seasons of double-digit home run performances as well as the only to do so in consecutive seasons. She opened the season going 3-for-4 with 2.000 slugging percentage, including two homers, a double and a career high seven RBIs against Lipscomb (February 22) and closed out the regular season hitting a perfect 2-for-2 with a 4.000 slugging percentage, including two homers and three RBIs against Akron (May 4), becoming only the second Falcon to hit two homers in a game twice in a season and to do so three times in her career. She led the MAC and finished 40th in the nation for homers despite being the fifth most walked player in the nation, the most walked player in the MAC and the most walked player in a single season and career in program history as opponents gave her first base 37 times this season averaging 0.86 walks per game. Wiemer also dominated from the pitching mound this season as she posted a 15-7 overall record and 11-1 in the MAC, recording five shutouts and one combined retiring 120 batters on strikes in 155.0 innings of work with a 1.76 ERA. She is not only a leader in the MAC but is ranked among the top 100 in nation in six different categories. She is also 13th in the nation for walks allowed per seven innings, giving up a mere 1.08 walks per seven innings of work from the circle. She ended the regular season with a no hitter shutout against Akron (May 4) fanning seven batters in five innings and giving up no walks and then posted the lowest ERA of any pitcher at the MAC Tournament (0.56 ERA), allowing only two earned runs in 25.0 innings of work, fanning 11 batters. Wiemer was also named the BGSU junior Scholar Athlete, to the MAC All-Tournament team, MAC East Pitcher of the week twice and MAC Scholar Athlete twice this year.

Vallas, a senior Perrysburg, Ohio native earned her second straight first team All-MAC and ESPN the Magazine All-District first team selection, her third Academic All-MAC honor and her first ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honor as she finished her collegiate career. She is an exercise science major with a 3.95 GPA while second for the Falcons with a .347 batting average and a .579 slugging percentage, including 42 hits, a team high 26 RBIs, eight doubles, six homers and a triple. Vallas opened the season with an eight game hitting streaking, including three multiple hit games and then went on a seven game hitting streak during the Falcons home stand. Vallas tied her career high RBIs (4) in back-to-back gamesat the BGSU Softball Field, which included hitting a career high two homers against Eastern Michigan (April 11) becoming the sixth Falcon in program history to accomplish such a feat. Vallas ended her collegiate career recording at least one hit in six of the last seven games, including three multiple hit games. On defense this season she led the Falcons with 338 putouts and tied for the second best fielding percentage (.986). She was also named, MAC East Division Player of the Week honors twice, MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week and War Eagle Classic All-Tournament team honors.
