CONWAY, Ark. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Jacob Lawrence headed home a pair of goals, with the second coming in double overtime, as the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13). The game, the final contest of the UCA Tournament, was held at Farris Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-3-0 on the season. BGSU won both weekend matches in Arkansas to capture the UCA Tournament title. The host Bears drop to 2-4-0 on the year.
The Falcons earned a come-from-behind win for the second consecutive day. UCA broke a scoreless draw at the 60:56 mark, but Lawrence headed home Hunter Van Houten's corner kick at 81:29, then scored the winner at 103:37.
"The guys worked really hard again today," said Falcon head coach Fred Thompson. "We played quite well and created a lot of chances in the first half. It is unfortunate that we weren't able to put away any of those chances, and that is something we will work on improving.
"In the second half, though, we continued the hard work, and were rewarded with the tying goal late in regulation and the overtime winner. We did a fantastic job of coming from behind again today."
Paul Shoemaker had five saves to earn the win in goal. The Falcons had a decided advantage in shots, with 27 to the Bears' 11. BG had a 12-6 margin in shots on goal, with Chris Jurtovski firing three SOG and Lawrence and Dusko Topolic two apiece.
UCA was whistled for 18 fouls to the Falcons' nine, and the Bears had four of the game's five yellow cards.
"It is great to come away with a tournament title this weekend," said Thompson. "We look forward to heading back home and getting ready to open the home schedule."
Lawrence's 'Golden Goal' came just before sirens went off, indicating a tornado warning in the area.
The Falcons will return to Northwest Ohio for the next two matches, beginning Friday (Sept. 19). BGSU will host IPFW in a 2:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field, before facing Saint Francis (Pa.) in Sunday (Sept. 21) action.
FALCON NOTES
* The Falcons posted a 2-0-0 record in an in-season tournament for the first time in over nine years ... the last time BG had two wins in a tourney was on Sept. 4-5, 1999, at the BGSU Invitational (wins over Western Kentucky and DePaul).
* BGSU had not gone 2-0-0 in a tournament away from home since the 1997 campaign ... on Sept. 6-7 of that year, the Brown and Orange picked up wins over Memphis and South Alabama to win the Memphis Classic ... that '97 team went on to finish 18-6-0 overall and advance to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament.
* Just five games into the 2008 season, BGSU already has matched last year's total for wins away from home (road and neutral-site games) ... the 2007 Falcons were 2-7-1 away from Cochrane Field.
* With the two goals on Saturday, Jacob Lawrence matched his career total ... Lawrence had a pair of goals in his freshman season of 2006, against Western Michigan (one in the regular-season meeting, one in the MAC Tournament) ... his OT goal at UCA was the first game-winning goal of Lawrence's career.
* The Falcons now lead Central Arkansas, 2-0-0, in the all-time series between the teams ... the only prior meeting also want to double overtime ... in last year's home opener (Sept. 14, 2007), Abiola Sandy's goal at 109:11 gave the Brown and Orange a 1-0 win over the Bears in the Falcon Invitational.
* BGSU's total of 27 shot attempts vs. UCA was a season high ... in fact, Saturday's total nearly matched the amount of shots credited to the Falcons in the first four games combined (32).
* BG last had as many as 27 shot attempts on Oct. 7 of last season, in a scoreless tie vs. IPFW ... the Falcons' 12 shots on goal vs. UCA was the highest since a 2003 game vs. IPFW (15 shots in a 2-1 win on Oct. 10, 2003).
