CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference has just announced that John Powers and Matt Schneider have been named MAC Golfers of the Week for their efforts at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. Powers and Schneider shared the award with Ball State's Brian Maurer.
This marks the third time in three tournaments that the BGSU men's golf team has walked away with the weekly award. Freshman Drew Preston was named MAC Golfer of the Week following the Rutherford Intercollegiate (Aug. 31), while Schneider earned the award after capturing the John Piper Intercollegiate (Sept. 9).
This is the second time in Powers' career that he has captured the weekly MAC award. As a freshman Powers won the UD Spring Invitational, his first career tournament win. This past week the Bowling Green, Ohio, native carded a 54-hole score of 209, one shy of the all-time BGSU low 54-hole score. He opened with a 68-69, and finished with a 72, which included a five-hole stretch where he recorded five straight birdies.
Schneider secured the MAC Golfer of the Week for the second consecutive week after winning the John Piper Intercollegiate back on Sept. 9. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native opened with 69-66 and finished with a 74 for the same 209 score, one shy of the BGSU record.
Powers and Schneider finished in a tie for second in the 75-player field.
Powers is averaging 72.7 through nine rounds of action, while Schneider has a 72.6 average through those same nine rounds.
