The Bowling Green State University football team had a busy day with the media this afternoon (Sept. 29) following the 45-16 win over Wyoming. Here are some of their thoughts.
Coach Gregg Brandon
"It's an afternoon game, 4:00 p.m. We should be able to get a group here. The team walk is something the kids really enjoy when the fans line the sidewalk east of the Doyt they're all cranked up four, five or six rows deep two hours before every game."
On Eastern Michigan
"Their record is deceiving. They've lost four straight but they haven't been exactly close game. They are turning the ball over, they are still playing hard, they run to the ball. I think they are pretty well coached. It's a MAC game anything can happen in the MAC. You have to be ready to play week in and week out. All our guys have to do is turn on last year's game that should be enough motivation to come out ready to play."
On Eastern Michigan's offense
"Their offense is very similar to ours. They are a one back shot gun team. They run the quarterback. The run game is like a mirror image just watching them. They are throwing the ball very efficiently at least the games I have watched. Their throwing the short passing game well and they are hitting some big plays. You can't just line up and say we're going to blitz them or you can't just line up and say we're going to drop eight. They are similar schematically to Minnesota. Their tight ends are good pass catching guys. We have to have good plan for them, definitely."
On Wyoming
"I think we played four quarters, and that's the first time we've done that in a long time. I think all phases of our game were working. The special teams and defense played great, and the offense finally showed up and put points on the board. We had a great game plan, and I think no matter what call it is, if we do our job each and every play, it will work for us. That's just the type of offense we are. The coaches, they're here 24 hours a day trying to game plan stuff, and they did a great job this past week."
On whether or not MAC play is when the real season starts
"Yeah, it is. And it's usually a little momentum, especially scoring 45 with our offense, just getting a lot of confidence to show what we can do, especially going into our conference which is going to be extremely tough this year with all the teams that are playing well. We're going to start off with a good Eastern team. They're a tough team.
On the importance of getting the first win of 2008 in BG this week
"Oh, it will be extremely important to get our first win, to get the fans back involved. I think us winning by such a substantial margin this past week will help some more fans get out there. We always usually have a pretty good crowd at Homecoming with a bunch of players coming back and alumni. So, we expect this place to be rocking, like it was for Minnesota."
On Wyoming
"There were a couple of situations where it bailed us out of difficult times, when the game could have turned a couple of different ways if you take away those turnovers. Coach Brandon and the coaches have been stressing it since the beginning of the season, and it showed up in the games that we've won, we've won the turnover battles. Getting our offense on the field more is our goal; we want to play as few plays as possible on defense, and getting those turnovers was awesome for us."
On whether or not MAC play is when the real season starts
"Yeah, definitely. Anybody can come out of the MAC every year, and we've seen that year in and year out. You can't take anybody lightly. So, we're excited to get going into it and achieve our goal of trying to winning the championship."
On playing at home again
"It's going to be awesome to be back home. We let one slip through our fingers, a great opportunity, last time. The fans came out and supported us, and we felt like we let them down, so we want to come back home, get the fans back out, make a statement, and try to get everybody excited again."
