
Falcons Fall to Huskies in Season Opener

DEKALB, Illinois - Head Coach Kerrie Beach and the Bowling Green State University gymnastics teams fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies, 193.450-191.875 this evening (Jan. 11) in their season opener. The Falcons recorded six individual top three finishes, including two number one performances from junior Breanne Guy on the vault tying her career high 9.875 and from red-shirt freshman Kasey Fillmore on the balance beam with a 9.750.
The Orange and Brown were led by a large number of veterans however three gymnasts made their official collegiate debut as Falcons, including Fillmore's number one performance on the beam along with freshman Dawn Christman and Andrea Kinzer recording big scores for the Falcons.
The Falcons started off the meet on the vault as Guy landed a 9.875 tying her career best, which is also the fourth best score in program history and winning the event. Also recording a big score for the Falcons was Kinzer in her first ever collegiate vault with a 9.800 taking home third place in the event. Right behind her was fellow freshman Christman also in her first collegiate vault recording a 9.750 in the forth position. Also competing on the vault were Queenita Gamble with a 9.575 finishing eighth and Lexi Psichopaidas with a 9.475 finishing 10th.
Next up on the rotation for the Falcons were the uneven bars. Once again Guy led the Falcons swinging her way to a 9.725 tying for the second best score of the meet. Senior Jholeen Ponce and red-shirt sophomore Amber Brewer also posted big scores for the Falcons on bars each recording a 9.650 tying for fourth on the event. Also finishing in the top ten on bars were Fillmore with a 9.575 finishing eighth and Megan Chronister with a 9.425 finishing ninth.
The Falcons then moved on to the balance beam where red-shirt freshman Fillmore shined in her first collegiate appearance on the balance beam with a 9.750 winning the event for the Orange and Brown. Gamble came up with another solid routine for the Falcons on the beam with a 9.700 tying for third. The Falcons had three other gymnasts finish in the top 10 with Ponce recording a 9.650 in seventh spot, Guy with a 9.600 in the ninth spot and Chronister with a 9.250 in the 10th spot.
The Falcons finished up the meet with the floor exercise where despite recording a low score of 9.050 was BG lowest team scoring event. Guy led the Falcons sticking a 9.775 tying for second. Senior Jenna Wirtanen finished with the second best score for the Falcons with a 9.525 on the floor tied for seventh. Lauryn Carr recorded a 9.475 and Kinzer recorded a 9.400 rounding out the Falcons finishing in the top 10.
Guy competed in the all-around for the Falcons setting a new career best 38.975 and tying the fourth best all-around performance in program history despite falling to the Huskies Holly Reichard with a 39.125.
The Falcons will return home to Anderson Arena for their home opener against Ball State on Sunday, January 18, at 2:00 p.m. where the Falcons will on honor their parents for Parent's Day. The 2009 season will mark the first season that all home gymnastics competitions will be held in Anderson Arena.
