MONROEVILLE, Pa. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team started off the dual-match portion of the season on a successful note, posting a 5-2 win over host Duquesne University Friday evening (Jan. 16). The match was held at the Club 4 Life.
Friday marked the first dual-match action of the 2008-09 season for both the Falcons and the Dukes.
Host DU won the doubles point, capturing a pair of tightly-contested matches at the top-two flights. At the top flight, Zena Williams and Rachel McGowan outlasted the Falcon duo of senior Kelsey Jakupcin and sophomore Christine Chiricosta by a 9-7 count.
The second-flight match was even closer, as DU's Samantha Noble and Rebecca Poole needed a tiebreaker to squeak past juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel.
At the third flight, BG seniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff posted a convincing 8-3 win over their Duquesne foes.
Trailing, 1-0, the Falcons proceeded to reel of five singles wins to capture the match. Jakupcin was extended to a third set by Williams at flight number one, but won that third set by a 6-1 score.
Chiricosta lost a total of just five games in her flight-two win over McGowan, while Kintzel defeated Poole in straight sets at the third flight.
DU's lone singles win came at the fourth flight, where Noble got past Babina in a third-set mini-'breaker.
The Falcons posted straight-sets victories at the fifth and sixth flights, courtesy of Menoff and Harrison, respectively. Menoff lost only four games in her sweep of Tara Majdalani, while Harrison was even more dominant, losing only one game in a straight-sets win over Alexandria Albano.
The win makes the Falcons a perfect 4-0 in the all-time series with Duquesne. Friday's match was the first time the teams have met in Pennsylvania.
BGSU's weekend trip continues with Saturday's (Jan. 17) match vs. Youngstown State University. That dual will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Boardman Tennis Center.
