YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up a second road win in as many days, posting a 5-2 victory over host Youngstown State University Saturday evening (Jan. 17). The non-conference dual match was held at the Boardman Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-0 in dual-match play, while the Penguins drop to 0-1.
After dropping the doubles point in Friday's (Jan. 16) dual-match season opener at Duquesne, the Falcons sailed through the doubles portion of Saturday's contest with relative ease. BG lost a total of just four games in the three matches.
At the top flight, senior Kelsey Jakupcin and sophomore Christine Chircosta picked up an 8-1 win over their YSU counterparts, while juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel downed their Penguin foes by the identical score at flight number two.
At the third flight, seniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff posted an 8-2 win to give the Falcons three victories in as many doubles matches.
BGSU was a whisker away from a 7-0 win, as the Falcons captured four singles matches and lost a pair of third-set tiebreakers by the slimmest of margins.
Jakupcin topped Sarah Lynch by identical 6-4 scores at the top flight, while Chiricosta made quick work of Lauren Hankle at the second flight, 6-0, 6-1.
YSU's Anna Volkova eked out a win over Kintzel at the third flight, winning by a 12-10 outcome in the third-set tiebreaker. Babina dropped a narrow 'breaker at the fourth flight, falling to Tanisha Welch, also by a 12-10 result, after splitting her first two sets.
At the fifth flight, Menoff also went to a tiebreaker, but picked up a 10-4 decision to capture her match against Nicole Haralambopoulos. Harrison dropped only two total games in her sixth-flight win over Irena Lanc.
The Falcons now return to Northwest Ohio for the next three matches, beginning with Friday's (Jan. 23) dual vs. Cleveland State University. That match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the brand-new Perrysburg Tennis Center.
