PERRYSBURG, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team improved to 3-0 on the young dual-match season with a 7-0 whitewashing of visiting Cleveland State University Friday night (Jan. 23). The match was the first at BGSU's new indoor home, the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
"It was a great match," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "Although the final score ended up 7-0, it felt much closer than that throughout the match. We are happy to kick off our schedule at the Perrysburg Tennis Center with a win."
BGSU swept the doubles point, with a pair of close matches at the top-two flights. Senior Kelsey Jakupcin teamed with sophomore Christine Chiricosta to pick up an 8-6 win at the top flight. The Jakupcin/Chiricosta duo trailed the Vikings' team of Sanda Bjelan and Catrine Bjerrehus by a 5-3 count before rallying to take five of the last six games.
At the second flight, juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel topped their CSU foes, Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb, in a tiebreaker. Seniors Stefanie Menoff and Libby Harrison made quick work of their Viking opponents at the third flight, recording an 8-2 outcome.
In singles action, Jakupcin, Chiricosta and Menoff all improved to 3-0 in dual-match play this season to date. Harrison remained undefeated as well, winning her sixth-flight match by default after a CSU injury left the Vikings with just five players for the singles portion of the evening.
Jakupcin won a pair of close sets over Bjerrehus at the top flight, while Chiricosta's two sets were anything but close. The soph did not lose a game in her dismantling of Tabb at the second flight.
Kintzel posted a straight-sets win over Myra Pepino at the third flight, while Babina and Menoff each won their singles matches by identical 6-1 scores in both sets, at the fourth and fifth flights, respectively.
While the Falcons and Vikings have crossed paths numerous times in various tournaments and invitationals, Friday night marked the teams' first dual-match meeting in nearly a decade, since a 7-0 BGSU win on April 10, 1999. The Falcons now lead the all-time series by a 4-0 count.
This fall, CSU participated in the BGSU Invitational, and the Vikings also joined the Falcons at both the Spartan Invitational and the ITA Regional.
With Saturday's (Jan. 24) BGSU-Wright State match cancelled due to a WSU scheduling conflict, the Falcons are now idle from intercollegiate competition for nearly two weeks. BG will conclude a three-game homestand at the Perrysburg Tennis Center with matches vs. Xavier on Feb. 7 and Cincinnati on Feb. 8.
