PERRYSBURG, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team remained undefeated in dual-match play this season, posting a 6-1 win over Xavier University Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7). The non-conference match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons of head coach Penny Dean improved to 4-0 in dual-match action, while the Musketeers dropped to 3-2.
BGSU started the day by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Christine Chiricosta and senior Kelsey Jakupcin won a convincing 8-2 decision at the top flight, while Xavier's second-flight duo of Kelsey Kinnard and Tifanie Treece picked up an 8-5 win over BG juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel.
Needing a win at the third flight to take the doubles point, the Falcons got just that, as seniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff rallied from a 5-2 deficit to post an 8-6 win over XU's Christie Pleiman and Jill Ducro. BGSU had an early 1-0 lead as the teams prepared for singles play.
In singles action, BG competitors won five of the six matches. At the second flight, Chiricosta had little trouble dispatching of Treece, losing just one game in her straight-sets sweep. Kintzel battled Jeanette Feider into a third set before picking up a win at the third flight, while Babina downed Kaitlyn Zinn in straight sets at the fourth flight.
Harrison also won in straight sets, topping Pleiman at the sixth flight in the match that gave the Falcons the fourth point to clinch the overall victory.
XU's Kara Courtney outlasted Jakupcin in a third-set tiebreaker at the top flight, but that would prove to be the only point the Musketeers would get. In another match decided in a third-set 'breaker, Menoff rallied back after losing the first set to pick up a win over Kinnard at the fifth flight.
Chiricosta, Harrison and Menoff all have 4-0 singles records in dual-match action this year, while the Harrison/Menoff doubles team is 4-0 during that stretch. Neither Harrison nor Menoff have lost a match since the Fall MAC Invitational on Oct. 12.
The Falcons now lead Xavier, 13-4, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has won five consecutive matches vs. the Musketeers. BG is now 8-1 all-time in home matches vs. XU.
BGSU will conclude a three-match homestand on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8) against another Queen City foe. The Falcons will face Cincinnati in a match scheduled to begin at noon at the PTC.
