October 01, 2009 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team gave Miami (Ohio) everything it could handle for two sets but the Falcons came up on the short end of a 26-24, 28-26, 25-13 match Thursday night in Anderson Arena.
Both of the first two sets took extra time to determine a winner but the RedHawks came up with big points late in both of those stanzas. In the first set, Bowling Green fought back from an early 10-3 deficit to tie the score at 16-16 behind a Corey Domek kill. Miami extended the lead again, taking a late 23-17 lead. Following a Falcon timeout, Allison Kearney, Emily Kauth and Kaitlin Jackson recorded kills in succession to cut the lead in half. Following a Miami attack error, Jackson and Kauth paired up for a block to make the score 23-22. After a Miami kill, Jackson had a kill and Kearney served up an ace to tie the score at 24-24. But the RedHawks answered back with kills from Amy Raseman and Jenn Caylor for the win.
Set two see-sawed back-and-forth until Miami edged ahead 23-20. Domek and Shari Luther had back-to-back kills and, after a Miami point, Domek posted another kill followed by a Miami attack error to tie the score at 24-24. Domek put the Falcons ahead 25-24 with yet another kill but the RedHawks' Hallie Hanks had a kill to tie the score. Domek and Luther picked up a block on the next point to put Bowling Green on top 26-25 but Miami scored the next three points with two kills sandwiched around a block.
Set three was close early but the Falcons struggled with attack errors and hit just .062 in that final set.
Domek led the team with 12 kills and added six digs. Kauth added 11 kills and Ashley Helzberg had 11 digs. Kearney finished with 30 assists and three aces.
Miami improves to 8-7 on the year and 3-0 in MAC play while Bowling Green falls to 7-10 and 0-3 in conference. The Falcons play at Western Michigan Saturday at 7 p.m.
