Barnes Named National CFPA Wide Receiver of the Week; Sheehan Earns Honorable Mention at QB
October 11, 2009 | Football
The College Football Performance Awards announced this afternoon that Bowling Green State University's Freddie Barnes has been named the National Wide Receiver of the Week and Tyler Sheehan earned honorable mention at quarterback as the duo hooked up for three touchdowns and a handful of school records on Saturday night in Kent, Ohio.
Barnes, a native of Chicago Heights, Ill., hauled in 22 catches for 278 yards (both school records) and three touchdowns. The 22 catches were one shy of the NCAA record. Barnes recorded receptions of 45, 53 and 55 yards and even added nine yards on the ground on three carries.
Through six games Barnes leads the nation with 75 receptions and 722 yards, and is currently on pace to snap the NCAA record for catches in a season, set back in 1989 by Manny Hazard (Houston) in 1989.
Sheehan, like Barnes, set several new BGSU school records. The Cincinnati, Ohio native was 44 of 63 for 505 yards (all new school records) and added four touchdowns.
Even with all of those passing yards, it was Sheehan's legs that scampered in for a nine-yard touchdown run with five seconds remaining in the game to secure a 36-35 win at Kent State.
Sheehan is averaging 326.7 yards a game through the air, fourth-best in the country. Through six games he has thrown for 1,960 yards and 11 touchdowns.
