Bowling Green, Ohio – Senior Kaitlin Jackson had 13 kills and classmate Emily Kauth added 12 but the Bowling Green volleyball team lost to Cleveland State 25-23, 25-23, 25-21 Tuesday night.
It was the second time this year that Cleveland State beat Bowling Green as the Vikings won in five sets in a neutral site match at the Ohio State Invitational earlier this year. This time, Bowling Green's .275 attack percentage was its best in the last 12 matches but the Falcons allowed an opponent to hit over .300 for fourth consecutive contest as Cleveland State hit .347.
As has been the case lately, Bowling Green jumped out on top early in two of the three sets but was unable to hold onto the lead in the latter stages. The Falcons led the opening set 15-10 and was on top as late as 22-21 but could not put Cleveland State away. In the third set, Bowling Green led 17-13 but the Vikings scored six straight to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Shari Luther had five kills in the opening set and her final one put the Falcons on top 22-21. After a Cleveland State timeout, the Falcons had a service error and Cleveland State added kills from Megan Barhorst and Kara Koch to go on top 24-22. Allison Kearney cut the deficit to one with a kill but Koch terminated a pass on set point for the 25-23 Cleveland State win.
Bowling Green trailed for most of the second set but was never behind by more than four points. The Falcons got within one on a Noelle Spitler kill to make it 22-21 but a ball handling error followed by a Barhorst kill gave Cleveland State some breathing room at 24-21. The Vikings then had a service error and Kauth posted a kill to make it 24-23 but Liz Fazio closed out the stanza with a kill.
In the final set, Bowling Green went on top 17-13 but Cleveland State scored the next six points on three kills, two blocks and a ball handling error to make it 19-17. The Falcons were within one on a Corey Domek kill at 21-20 but Cleveland State scored four of the final five points to win the match.
Along with Jackson's 13 kills, she added six digs. Kauth hit .625, posting those 12 kills on just 16 swings. Kearney dished out 41 assists, the most by a BG player in a three-set match this year, and added six digs. Ashley Herzberg led the team with 10 digs. Luther had eight kills and five blocks.
Cleveland State improves to 18-5 on the year and Bowling Green falls to 7-14. The Falcons will host Eastern Michigan Friday night at 7 p.m.
