Falcon freshmen post victories early in the season
Bowling Green, Ohio—In the second meet of the season, the Bowling Green State University Falcons came up just short against the Ball State Cardinals (1-1), losing 153-141 at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. With this loss, the Falcons record falls to 0-2.
Despite the loss, the Falcons swam a strong meet, posting 21 top-three finishes, including seven individual first place finishes and two relay victories. Eight of those 21 victories came from freshmen Falcons, with Alexis Kain claiming two first-place victories.
Kain, a native of Cincinnati, OH, set the pace in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. Kain posted times of 1:07.38 and 2:26.80, respectively. She was also a member of the 'A' relay team which took first in the 400-yard medley relay and the 'B' relay that took third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Senior captain Meg Richardson also boasted two first place finishes. Richardson led the way in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.12) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.52). Richardson was also a member of both relay squads that took top honors.
Freshman Emily Bennet, Sophomore Vicky Yu and Junior Sarah Burston were among the Falcons who captured first place victories. Bennet found her first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.34) as well as a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.16) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:13.00). Yu claimed the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.28) and was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (58.47).Burston, who holds the top BGSU time in the 100-yard butterfly, snagged a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM and a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
Other Falcon swimmers who captured top-three finishes were: freshman Emily Waller in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10.43.13); sophomore Andrea Brown in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.07); freshman Alexa Harris in the 200-yard backstroke (1:00.09); sophomore Megan Bomicino in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.66); sophomore Amanda Rom in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.68); and freshman Jamie Akenberger in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.17).
The Falcons final score was damaged by the 32 unchallenged points the Cardinals earned on the diving board.
Rounding out the success the Falcons found in this afternoon's meet against the Cardinals came in the form of two first-place finishes and one third-place finish in relay events. The Orange and Brown squad of Harris, Kain, Yu and Richardson took the top spot in the 400-yard medley relay, posting a time of 3:56.06. The Falcons found similar success in the 200-yard freestyle relay, capturing first and third place finishes. Richardson, Yu, Sarah Reinink and Bennet set the pace for a first-place finish (1:38.35) while teammates Waller, Carrie Enright, Akenberger and Kain followed close behind for a third place finish (1:39.11).
The Falcons dive back into MAC competition next weekend when they play host to Ohio University on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. and Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at 1:00 p.m.
