BGSU swim team will face tough competition in home openers, this weekend
Bowling Green, Ohio--The Bowling Green State University women's swim team will host Mid-American Conference competitors this weekend to kick of their home schedule for the 2009-10 season. The Falcons will compete against the top contenders, Ohio University and Miami (Ohio) from the 2009 MAC Championship, this Friday and Saturday. The Ohio Bobcats will face off against the Falcons Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at 5:00 p.m., while the Miami Redhawks are set to compete on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at 1:00 p.m.; both meets will be held at Cooper Pool.
Richardson Fronts the Falcons
Sole senior, Meg Richardson, was named the captain of the BGSU women's swim team for the second year in a row, and for good reasons too. At the 2008-09 MAC Championships, Richardson shattered record times in two individual events (23.43 in the 50-yard freestyle and 50.80 in the 100-yard freestyle), and was a member of four record-setting relay squads, including the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.72), the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.52), the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.83) and the 400-yard medley relay (3:45.15).
In her first MAC competitions of the 2009-10 season, Richardson swam as if no time had passed between seasons. Over Halloween weekend, Richardson and the Falcons squared off against the Eastern Michigan Eagles and the Ball State Cardinals. Between the two meets, Richardson captured seven first-place finishes out of the eight races she competed in, including four relays that tapped in for first-place. In the 50-yard freestyle, Richardson swam the fastest individual time (23.82) in the conference; only four-tenths of a second off of her current record in the event.
For her performances in last weekend's races, Richardson was named the BGSU Papa John's Athlete of teh Week and was nominated for MAC Swimmer of the Week.
Scouting the Bobcats
The Ohio University Bobcats (2-0) have started off the 2009-10 season with double victories against Akron (164-136) and Buffalo (154-146). Last season, the Bobcast defeated the Falcons by a slim 15-point margin. At the 2008-09 MAC Championships, the Bobcats finished in second place with 611.5 points, behind only the Miami Redhawks.
Scouting the Redhawks
The Miami Redhawks have started the 2009-10 season with a 2-0 record. Similar to the Bobcats, the Redhawks defeated Buffalo (171-129) and Akron (187-111) in last weekend's competitions. Last year, the Redhawks were victorious against the Falcons, winning 182-116. The Redhawks were the top contenders at the 2008-09 MAC Championships, racking up 639.5 points.
