Bowling Green, Ohio – Six players scored in double figures but the Bowling Green men's basketball team lost its third consecutive game, dropping a 90-83 overtime decision to Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday afternoon in Anderson Arena.
Junior point guard Joe Jakubowski led the Falcons with 16 points and seven assists but the Falcons were unable to hold onto a 74-69 lead in the final 80 seconds of regulation.
Scott Thomas scored with 1:21 left to put Bowling Green ahead by five but Milwaukee's Ricky Franklin answered with a jumper with 1:09 left to cut the deficit to three at 74-71. After Otis Polk, who finished with his first double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds, missed a pair of free-throws, Franklin scored on a three-point play with 58 seconds left to tie the score and send it to overtime.
Polk opened the overtime session by making two free-throws but Jason Averkamp knocked down a three-pointer to give Milwaukee a 77-76 lead less than a minute into the extra session. Deonte Roberts gave the Panthers a 79-76 lead on the team's next possession but the Falcons answered back with four free-throws, two each from Polk and Thomas, to take an 80-79 lead with 2:38 to go.
From that point forward, it was all Milwaukee. The Panthers scored the next seven points and the Falcons made just one basket in the overtime session, a Jakubowski three-pointer with 32 seconds left, as Milwaukee won its fourth straight.
Freshman Jordon Crawford came off the bench to spark the Falcons in the first half and he ended with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Bowling Green trailed 35-23 with 4:21 to play in the opening session but Crawford's offense and defense helped the Falcons score the final eight points of the period to make it 35-31 at the break. He had two of his steals and five points during that stretch to get BGSU back in the contest.
Bowling Green led by as many as seven in the second half when Crawford hit a three-pointer with 10:20 to play to make it 56-49. But Milwaukee scored 10 of the next 12 points and it was close the rest of the way.
Erik Marschall came off the bench to score 12 points and grab six rebounds, making 6-of-7 free-throws. Dee Brown had 11 points and two steals and Thomas had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Bowling Green shot 62 percent from the field in the second half and 46 percent for the game while Milwaukee made just 44 percent of its shots. The Panthers were the third Falcon opponent in a row to make at least 10 three-pointers though they took 32 attempts to make 11 (34 percent). Seven of those makes came in the first half.
Milwaukee improves to 5-2 on the season and Bowling Green falls to 1-3. The Falcons will host Isiah Thomas' Florida International team Monday night at 7 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
