Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green sophomore guard Dee Brown scored a career-high 20 points as the men's basketball team defeated Florida International, coached by Isiah Thomas, Monday night 67-62.
After a slow start to the game, Brown sparked the team offensively. The Falcons trailed 13-11 midway through the first half but he knocked down a jumper that began a stretch of hot shooting. BGSU made 11-of-12 shots and Brown scored nine of the team's first 13 points during that period to give the Falcons a 24-17 lead.
Bowling Green continued to extend the lead behind a Luke Kraus three-pointer and lay-up to make it 29-19. Joe Jakubowski's three-ball with 2:21 left was followed by a Scott Thomas jumper to make it 36-24 and the Falcons went into the break up 39-26.
As the second half started, Bowling Green continued to have a hot hand and the Falcons made their first four shots to build an early 17-point lead. But Florida International's Phil Gary hit back-to-back three-pointers as the Golden Panthers went on an 11-2 run to get back in the game.
Again Bowling Green extended the lead, pushing it back to 16 at 57-41 with 13:06 to go but the Falcons gave up 10 consecutive points over the next 3:30 and the game was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way. Florida International got as close as three points on a pair of free-throws with 39 seconds left but Scott Thomas made 1-of-2 free-throws and the Falcon defense forced a miss that sealed the game.
Brown made 8-of-16 shots on the evening to pace Bowling Green. Thomas added 10 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Otis Polk had seven points and 11 rebounds, his second consecutive 11-rebound performance, before fouling out late. Polk helped the team to a 39-28 rebounding advantage, including 15 for the team on the offensive glass.
Bowling Green shot 48 percent from the floor but made just 14-of-27 free-throws and only 5-of-20 three-pointers. The much-bigger Falcons blocked seven shots and held a 28-16 advantage on points in the paint.
Florida International falls to 2-7 on the season and Bowling Green improves to 2-3. The Falcons will play host to Savannah State Thursday night at 7 p.m.
