December 16, 2009 | Football
The awards continue to keep coming for Bowling Green State University's Freddie Barnes, who today was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year according to Sporting News Today.
Barnes, who was recently named to the Football Writers Association of America All-America First Team, as well as earning a trip to Orlando, Fla., for ESPN's Award Show as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, leads the country in receptions (138) and touchdowns (16).
Barnes and the Falcons will be playing in the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl versus Idaho on Dec. 30, 2009 in Boise, Idaho. While there, Barnes will be looking to break an NCAA record that has stood for the past 20 years. His 138 catches are four shy of Manny Hazard's 142 catches, set in 1989, the current record for catches in a season.
Barnes earned national honors throughout the year, being named the national wide receiver of the week on three different occasions by the College Football Performance Award (CFPA). His most notable performance came on Oct. 10 versus Kent State when he helped the Falcons erase a 12-point fourth quarter deficit after posting 22 catches for 278 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-35 win over the Flashes.
A week later the team captain posted 10 grabs for 160 yards and three more touchdowns in a 31-17 win at Ball State.
Just a few of his other most outstanding moments include catching 15 balls in the season opener versus Troy, 17 passes versus Marshall, 14 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown versus Central Michigan and 12 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns versus Akron.
For his career the fifth-year senior has 280 catches (most in school history) for 3,071 yards (second-most in BGSU history) and 27 touchdowns (second-most in school history).
