Philadelphia, Pa – The Bowling Green men's basketball team shot 17 percent in the first half and scored just 13 points as No. 18 Temple lived up to its defensive billing in a 63-39 win over the Falcons Monday night.
The game was the first played in Temple's McGonigle Hall in over a decade as the University billed the game as a Turn Back The Clock contest. Temple used its traditional defensive intensity to hold Bowling Green scoreless for almost nine minutes during the first half and the Owls rolled from there.
The Falcons built an early 7-6 lead on buckets from Marc Larson and Dee Brown, as well as a three-pointer by Jordan Crawford, but Temple scored the next 13 points and held Bowling Green to just one field goal over the final 13:24 of the half. The Owls went into the break up 32-13 and outrebounded BGSU 22-11. Temple's Lavoy Allen had 10 rebounds himself in the opening session.
Bowling Green made one run in the second half in attempting to come back from a big deficit. Temple finished a three-point play to take a quick 35-13 lead but the Falcons fought back. Dee Brown scored back-to-back baskets and Otis Polk followed with a jumper to cut the deficit to 16. After Temple scored, Erik Marschall answered and Polk followed with another jumper to make it 37-23. After an Allen offensive foul, Marschall scored on a lay-up again and Scott Thomas followed with a pair of free-throws to get BGSU back within 10 at 37-27 with 14:23 to play.
But Temple got three-pointers 28 seconds apart from Craig Williams and Ryan Brooks to put a dagger through Bowling Green's comeback attempt. The Falcons got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Bowling Green shot just 28 percent for the contest but did outrebound Temple by eight in the second half and finished with just a 36-33 deficit in that category. Temple made 10-of-23 (44 percent) three-pointers and shot 48 percent for the game. Bowling Green's 39 points was the team's lowest offensive output since losing to Miami 63-36 on March 1, 1995.
Brown was the only player to score in double-figures for the Falcons, finishing with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Marschall added eight points and Thomas had seven. Polk grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Temple, ranked No. 18 by the Associated Press and No. 19 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, improves to 10-2 on the season. Bowling Green, now 5-5, will continue its East Coast road swing by playing at Towson Wednesday at 7 p.m.
