Falcons to Face Idaho in Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl
December 06, 2009 | Football
The Bowling Green State University football team has announced that it has accepted an invitation to play in the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl versus the Idaho Vandals in Boise, Idaho on Dec. 30, 2009. Opening kickoff is set for 4:30 EST and will be carried live on ESPN.
“We're excited and honored to have the opportunity to play in the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl,” said BGSU head coach Dave Clawson. “I think it is a great reward for our football team and we are looking forward to continuing our season. This is a special way for our seniors to finish their careers. We anticipate a great game with the University of Idaho.”
The Humanitarian Bowl will be Bowling Green's fourth bowl contest since 2003, having won two of its past three bowl games. It will also be the second trip for the Orange and Brown in as many years to the “blue turf”, having played at Boise State in 2008 (L, 20-7).
The Falcons, led by first year head coach Dave Clawson, began the season just 1-4 overall, but won six of their last seven contests to finish the year 7-5 overall and 6-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
Offensively, the Falcons are led by one of the nation's top quarterback/wide receiver duos in the country. Third-year starting quarterback Tyler Sheehan ranks fifth in the country, averaging 305.3 yards per game through the air. On the season the senior has thrown for 3,664 yards and 23 touchdowns, including scores in 21 straight games, third longest active streak in the nation.
Sheehan's main offensive target is fellow classmate Freddie Barnes, a Biletnikoff finalist, given to the nation's most outstanding college football wide receiver. Barnes leads the country in receptions (138) and touchdowns (16) and is third in receiving yards (1,551). Barnes is just five catches away from breaking the NCAA mark of 142 catches in a season, held by Manny Hazard (Houston) since 1989.
“We are excited to accept the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl invitation and look forward to the trip to Boise,” said BGSU Athletic Director Greg Christopher. “I am most excited for Dave, our coaches and players. The bowl game is a great reward for the commitment our players and coaching staff put into this season. Our fans will have fun turning Boise into 'Bowling Green West' and I'm sure we'll paint the town orange and brown in late December.”
Idaho features the 11th ranked passing offense (290.6) in the country, led by quarterback Nathan Enderie, who is seventh in the country in passing efficiency (155.75). Enderie and the Vandals average 31.8 points per game.
The Vandals (7-5, 4-4 WAC) began the season winning six of its first seven contests, but dropped four of the last five games, including a 63-25 loss at Boise State.
