CULLOWHEE, NC - The Bowling Green State University baseball team allowed nine runs in the seventh inning as they dropped a 16-8 decision on Friday afternoon to Western Carolina to open the 2009 season. The Falcons hit three homeruns in the loss.
BGSU began the contest with a bang, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Ryan Shay led off the contest with a homerun to right field. The Falcons then loaded the bases with no outs, bringing up Logan Meisler who singled in a run, followed by a three-run blast off the bat of David Borcherdt to cap off the inning and spot the Falcons an early 5-0 lead.
The Falcons added their sixth run of the day in the fourth inning, but allowed single tallies in each of the first, third and fourth innings to lead 6-3 after four innings.
The Orange and Brown extended that lead to 8-3 in the fifth inning as junior Derek Spencer hammered a two-run homer to left field. Spencer finished the day going 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and scoring two runs.
Western Carolina began the comeback with three runs in the bottom half of the inning with the help of one BGSU walk and two hit batters. The Catamounts added one run in the sixth and then exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning the host school managed those nine runs on just five hits as the Falcons walked two batters, hit another one and committed two errors. The Falcons allowed six unearned runs on the day.
