CULLOWHEE, NC - The Bowling Green State University baseball team got several stellar pitching performances on Saturday afternoon, but managed just one run on three hits in a 4-1 loss to Western Carolina in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
In the opening inning the Falcons squandered a great opportunity with Jon Berti standing on third and Brian Hangbers on second with just one out but a Falcon strikeout and a pop up to second ended the early game rally.
In the bottom half of the inning the Catamounts took a 3-0 lead with the help of one walk and two hit batters.
BGSU gave up another run in the bottom of the fourth but a homerun by junior T.J. Blanton cut the lead to 4-1 in the top half of the fifth inning.
Freshman Ross Gerdeman and sophomore Kyle Atkins shutout Western Carolina in the final five innings to give the Orange and Brown the opportunity to climb back into the contest. Gerdeman threw 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball (allowed one unearned run), striking out two and allowing just two hits. Atkins closed out the eighth inning, recording one out.
The Falcons were unable to take advantage of the strong outing, managing just one hit in the final four innings of action.
BGSU falls to 0-2 on the early season while Western Carolina moves to 2-0 on the season. These same two teams will close out the three game series tomorrow afternoon, starting at 1 p.m.
