PERRYSBURG, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team returned to winning ways Friday night (Feb. 27), snapping a two-match losing streak with a 7-0 win over visiting Butler University. The non-conference dual match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, BGSU improves to 6-2 in dual matches this season, while dropping BU to 3-5 on the year.
Sophomore Christine Chiricosta, after missing last weekend's two matches with an injury, returned to the lineup Friday night. Chiricosta played at the top singles flight for the first time in dual-match action in her Falcon career, losing just four games en route to a sweep of the Bulldogs' Natali Jaimes.
Chiricosta teamed with senior co-captain Kelsey Jakupcin for an 8-2 victory at the number-one doubles flight.
"It was very nice to have Christine back in the lineup, and it was great to get back on the winning trail tonight," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean.
BGSU won all six singles matches, with Jakupcin losing only three games in her win over Molly Casperson at the second flight. At the middle two flights, Falcon juniors Samantha Kintzel and Katia Babina each lost their opening set, but came back for second-set wins. Both Kintzel and Babina won third-set tiebreakers over their BU foes.
Seniors Stefanie Menoff and Libby Harrison won in straight sets at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Menoff downed Cam Thompson by identical 6-3 scores, while Harrison did not lose a single game in her dismantling of BU's Heather Hayward.
The Harrison/Menoff duo had posted an 8-2 doubles win to give BGSU the first point of the night. Butler's only win all evening came when Casperson and Becky Jenkins got an 8-5 decision over Babina and Kintzel at the second doubles flight.
The Falcons are now a perfect 6-0 on the year when fielding a complete six-player lineup, and BGSU remains undefeated at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, with a 4-0 record at the team's new indoor home. BGSU is idle from competition for several weeks, before returning to the PTC for a match against IUPUI on March 15.
