PERRYSBURG, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team was firing on all cylinders Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8), winning at every flight in a 7-0 victory over the University of Cincinnati. The non-conference match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
BGSU is now a perfect 5-0 in dual-match play in 2008-09, and the Falcons are 3-0 in matches at the brand-new PTC.
"We really came out strong today," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We knew that Cincinnati was a tough team, and that we would have to be on our game. We were ready to go from the very start of the match, and everyone in the lineup played well today."
BGSU began by besting the Bearcats in all three doubles matches. At the top flight, senior co-captain Kelsey Jakupcin teamed with sophomore Christine Chiricosta for an 8-2 win over their UC foes.
Juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel outlasted the UC team of Jennifer Rowen and Elizabeth Young, 8-6, at the second flight. Seniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff made it a clean sweep in doubles play, picking up an 8-4 win at flight number three.
The Falcons' success continued in singles action, as BG won all six matches, including five in straight sets. The flight-one match was the only one to require a third set, as Jakupcin and UC's Ksenia Slynko split their first two sets. Jakupcin, however, came through with the win, outlasting Slynko in a tiebreaker.
Chiricosta had little trouble in her flight-two match against Valeria Dandik, losing only one total game in her straight-sets sweep. Kintzel lost only four games in her third-flight win over Rowen, and Babina surrendered just five total games in a win over Jennifer Wise at the fourth flight.
Menoff swept Safiyya Ismail in fifth-flight action, losing only two games in the first set and one in the second. Harrison picked up a victory at the sixth level, topping Young by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
Next up for BGSU are a pair of matches in Michigan in two weeks. The Falcons play at Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 21, before taking on Detroit the following evening.
