Falcons Finish Sixth at Palmas Del Mar With 1-Under 287 on Final Day

The Bowling Green State University men's golf team improved for the second straight day, finishing the Palmas Del Mar Classic in sixth-place. After opening the 54-hole event with a team score of 310, they fired a 296 on Tuesday, followed by a 287 on the final day of competition.
The 1-under 287 was the lowest score of a 10-team field on Wednesday afternoon, and the third lowest score of the entire week.
Virginia Commonwealth won the event (870), followed by Notre Dame (876), UNC Greensboro (880), Johnson & Wales (995), Santa Clara (887) and the Falcons (893) to round out the top six scores.
Junior Matt Schneider finished in a tie for ninth in the 54-player field with a score of 218, including a 4-under 68 on the final day of competition, the second-lowest round of the day for the entire tournament field.
Close behind was fellow classmate John Powers who carded a 222. After opening the week with a 77 the Bowling Green, Ohio, native rebounded nicely, carding 71-74 in the final 36 holes. He finished in a tie for 15th.
Bryan Mitchell, much like Powers, got off to a rough start at the beginning of the week, opening with an 80, but rallied late, firing a 77 on Tuesday and a 1-under 71 this afternoon. Mitchell finished in a tie for 30th.
Rounding out the Falcon competitors were a pair of freshmen in Parker Hewit and Drew Preston. Hewit finished in a tie for 35th with a score of 229 (81-74-74), while Preston finished 45th (80-74-79--233).
Up next for the Orange and Brown is the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kansas. The two-day event takes place on March 30-31.
