Men's Golf Heads to Puerto Rico for Palmas Del Mar Classic

The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will look to improve upon last week's finish at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate as they travel to Humacao, Puerto Rico, for the 2009 Palmas Del Mar Classic. The 54-hole event takes place from March 9-11.
Competing with the Orange and Brown in Puerto Rico will be: George Mason, Johnson & Wales, Notre Dame, UNC Greensboro, Old Dominion, Santa Clara, St. John's, St. Thomas Aquinas and Virginia Commonwealth.
A Few Notes on Men's Golf
The Falcons are averaging as a team 299.56 through six tournaments this season, and are in reach of setting a new school record in that mark. The current record, set by last year's squad, currently stands at 296.0.
John Powers and Matt Schneider rank in the top-10 in scoring average in the Mid-American Conference. Powers is second with a 72.93 average, while Schneider is eighth with a 73.94 average. Both Powers and Schneider are within reach of the school record for season average, held by current head coach Garry Winger (72.40) in 1994.
Freshmen Parker Hewit and Drew Preston rank 26th and 27th among the conference field. Hewit is averaging 75.56, while Preston is at 75.93. Hewit and Parker, both candidates for MAC Freshman of the Year honors, rank sixth and seventh among first-year players in the conference.
Last Week's Action
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team carded a 330 on the final day of competition to finish 14th at the fourth annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University. The Falcons finished the 54-hole event with a score of 973 (327-316-330).
BGSU, who was once again without John Powers, as well as seeing their first action outdoors in months, were led by freshman Parker Hewit. Hewit finished in a tie for 35th with a score of 235 (78-76-81).
Junior Matt Schneider and freshman Drew Preston both finished in a tie for 58th to finished in second and third for the Orange and Brown. Schneider (81-80-84) and Preston (84-78-83) both finished with 54-hole scores of 245.
Rounding out the Falcon competitors were Bryan Mitchell (84-83-82--249, T-67th) and Chad Walker (86-82-88--256, 78th).
