STOW, Ohio - The host University of Akron swept the three doubles matches, then took five of the six singles flights en route to a 6-1 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 10). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held indoors at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Zips improve to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in MAC action, while the Falcons drop to 10-5 and 3-2, respectively.
The win was Akron's first over BGSU since the 1992-93 season, and just the third-ever victory for the Zips against the Falcons.
The Zips took the doubles point, winning all three matches. The third flight was particularly close, with UA's duo of Lindsey Berry and Jeremie Benjamin picking up a narrow 8-7 (1) decision over BGSU juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel. The Zips' top doubles team, Zara Harutyunyan and Anna Baronayte, picked up an 8-3 victory to win for the 24th time in 25 decisions. UA's Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Carolina Castro Cota were victorious at the middle flight by an 8-4 outcome.
In singles action, Babina picked up the Falcons' lone win, losing only two total games in a fourth-flight win over Benjamin. But, Akron was able to win at each of the other five flights.
At the top flight, Falcon senior Kelsey Jakupcin downed Harutyunyan in the opening set, but Harutyunyan rallied to win the next two sets and take the match. Falcon senior Stefanie Menoff also extended her match to a third set, before falling to Kerry Langworthy at the fifth flight.
Baronayte and Gombera picked up wins at the second and third singles flights, downing sophomore Christine Chiricosta and Kintzel, respectively. Castro Cota also garnered up a point for the Zips, defeating senior Libby Harrison in sixth-flight action.
The win was the Zips' third over the Falcons in 28 series matches. BGSU had won 15 consecutive matches vs. the Zips since UA's last win in the 1992-93 season.
The Falcons will continue the weekend road swing, heading to Buffalo to face the Bulls on Saturday (April 11). That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. indoors at the Village Glen Tennis Center UB defeated Western Michigan, 4-3, on Friday, giving the Broncos their first MAC regular-season loss since 2004.
