BG Bounces Back, Beats Buffalo, 4-3

BUFFALO, N.Y. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up a key road win Saturday afternoon (April 11), defeating the University at Buffalo by a 4-3 count. The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Village Glen Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in MAC dual-match action. The Bulls drop to 12-5 and 5-2, respectively.

Heading into the final weekend of the season, the Falcons are fourth in the nine-team league standings. BGSU is two games behind league-leading Miami (6-0 MAC), with Western Michigan (5-1) and UB (5-2) holding down the second and third spots.

On Saturday, the host Bulls, the defending MAC Tournament champions, won the doubles point to open the match, and UB took a 2-0 lead by winning the first singles match to finish. The Falcons, however, battled back to win four of the five remaining singles battles to capture the match.
The teams were tied, 3-3, with only the sixth-flight singles competitors still on the court. BGSU senior Libby Harrison and UB's Anna Subenkova split their first two sets, with Harrison capturing the first set, but Subenkova responding with a win in the second set. The Falcon co-captain, however, came back to win the third set and give her team an important road win in MAC action.
UB had won the first doubles matches to finish, as Denise Harijanto and Diana Popescu downed the Falcon duo senior Kelsey Jakupcin and sophomore Christine Chiricosta at the top flight. The UB tandem of Diana Toia and Smaranda Stan defeated Harrison and fellow senior Stefanie Menoff in a narrow 8-6 match at the third flight to clinch the point.
BG juniors Samantha Kintzel and Katia Babina got a win at the middle doubles flight, with an 8-3 triumph over Subenkova and Aleksandra Petrova.
In singles, Harijanto doubled her team's lead with a win over Jakupcin at the top flight, but Babina downed Toia in straight sets at the fourth flight to give her team a point.
When Chiricosta and Kintzel won in straight sets at the second and third flights, respectively, the Falcons had a 3-2 lead in the match. Chiricosta dropped only three total games in her win over Popescu, while Kintzel defeated Stan.
Petrova defeated Menoff at the fifth flight, tying the overall match at 3-3 and setting up the clinching win by Harrison over Subenkova.
The Falcons return home for the remainder of conference competition. BGSU will host Ball State next Friday (April 17) and league-leading Miami Saturday (April 18), before playing host to the MAC Championships the following week (April 23-26). Each of next weekend's matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts, weather permitting.
