BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team won at every flight Friday afternoon (April 17), picking up a 7-0 win over visiting Ball State University. The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at sun-drenched Keefe Courts.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 12-5 on the season, and BGSU is now 5-2 in MAC play. The Cardinals drop to 5-12 and 0-7, respectively.
The victory was the 55th since the current senior class -- Libby Harrison, Kelsey Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff -- arrived on campus, tying the school record for wins in a four-year span.
"It was a beautiful day today," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We were glad to be playing a weekend of tennis at home, and we came out fired up and ready to go.
"We were able to get out to a good early start today, and were able to ride that start to a win. Now, we hope to take that momentum and that same attitude into tomorrow's match."
BGSU won the doubles point in convincing fashion. The team of senior Kelsey Jakupcin and sophomore Christine Chiricosta downed their BSU foes, 8-3, at the top flight, while Falcon juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel won by the identical score at the middle level.
At the third flight, seniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff dropped only one game in their win.
In singles action, no Falcon lost more than four games. Harrison did not lose a single game, whitewashing Rachel Surowiec by identical 6-0 scores at the sixth flight. Chiricosta lost only one game in her second-flight win over Dena Boulieris, while Jakupcin dropped a total of two games in a top-flight victory over Sarah Hebble.
Babina defeated Kylee Johnson at the third flight, losing a total of just three games, while Menoff lost four total games in her fifth-flight win over Hanna Oman. Kintzel was leading her fourth-flight match, 4-1 in the first set, when BSU's Hayley Hall was forced to default due to injury.
The Falcons close the regular season on Saturday afternoon (April 18), facing MAC champion Miami University on "Senior Day." The three fourth-year members of the Falcon program -- Harrison, Jakupcin and Menoff -- will be recognized in "Senior Day" festivities. The BGSU-Miami match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
Miami clinched the 2009 regular-season title with a 4-3 win at Western Michigan Friday. The RedHawks are a perfect 7-0 in MAC play to date, two games ahead of second-place BGSU, WMU and Buffalo.
A FEW FALCON NOTES
* BGSU will enter the final day of the MAC regular season in a three-way tie for second place ... the Falcons, Western Michigan and Buffalo all have 5-2 league records, two games behind Miami.
* The Falcons still could finish as high as the second seed or as low as the fifth seed for the upcoming MAC Championships ... the league championships begin on Thursday (April 23) at Keefe Courts, and will run through next Sunday (April 26).
* Friday's win over Ball State, as mentioned, was the 55th dual-match victory since the current senior class -- Libby Harrison, Kelsey Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff -- arrived on campus in the fall of 2005 ... BGSU has a mark of 55-29 in dual-match play during that time ... the current senior class has tied the record set by last year's senior class of Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle.
* BGSU's total of five MAC wins is the team's most since the 2002-03 season ... BG went 5-4 in MAC regular-season action that year.
* The Falcons will finish with a winning record in MAC regular-season play for the first time since that '02-03 campaign ... the Falcons have had just six prior winning records in league action, and only three in the last quarter-century.
* BGSU is now 2-0 at the 'new' Keefe Courts this season, and the Falcons are 3-0 all-time in dual matches played in their entirety at the facility.
