CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - A pair of Bowling Green State University women's basketball leaders on the court and in the lockerroom have displayed that leadership in the classroom as well. Falcon co-captains Lindsey Goldsberry and Tara Breske have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. The league office made the announcement Friday (April 17).
BGSU is one of just two teams to have two student-athletes named to the Academic All-MAC Team. Northern Illinois is the other.
Goldsberry, a native of Dayton, Ohio (Chaminade-Julienne H.S.), finished her BGSU career as the winningest player - male or female - in MAC basketball history. She started all 34 games in 2008-09, leading the Falcons in steals and finishing second in assists. She averaged 5.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.3 helpers and 1.8 thefts per game.
Goldsberry finished 11th in the MAC in steals and had an assist/turnover ratio of 2.08. BGSU won 114 games -- the most of any MAC school in a four-year span -- since her arrival on campus in the fall of 2005, and the Falcons went 59-5 in MAC regular-season games during her four years. 'Golds' ended her career with a total of 216 steals, ranking fifth in BGSU history. She had over 60 steals in each of her last three seasons.
In the classroom, Goldsberry has a 3.85 cumulative grade-point average as an early childhood education major.
Breske, a native of Temperance, Mich. (Bedford H.S.), started all 34 games in '08-09. She averaged 7.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocked shots, leading the team in blocks, and finishing second in rebounding and fourth in both scoring and steals.
Breske, who shot 49.1% from the field on the year, finished fourth in the MAC in blocks, and ranked ninth in FG% and 11th in boards. She averaged 8.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg over the final 13 games. In her three-year career to date, Breske has 648 points, 418 rebounds and 70 blocks.
In the classroom, Breske has a 3.58 cumulative GPA as an exercise science major.
The Academic All-MAC Team honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The 2008-09 Falcons won the MAC regular-season title for the fifth consecutive year. BGSU finished 29-5 overall and 15-1 in MAC play, advancing to a national postseason tournament for the fifth-straight season. The Falcons' overall win total was the second highest in school and MAC history, and the Brown and Orange advanced to the third round of the WNIT.
