Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green junior Marc Larson and sophomore Joe Jakubowski were named to the 2008-09 Men's Basketball Academic All-MAC Team Wednesday, as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. Bowling Green received two of the five selections for the team.
Jakubowski is a business major with a 3.53 grade point average and Larson is an engineering technology major with a 3.96 gpa. They join Buffalo's Vadim Fedotov (3.558 gpa in business administration) and Western Michigan's Derek Drews (3.24 gpa in accounting) and David Kool (3.38 gpa in physical education) on the squad. Larson and Kool were both named to the team for the second consecutive season, while both Jakubowski and Larson were also named ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District as well.
Jakubowski started all 33 games at point guard for the Falcons in 2008-09, ranking second on the team in minutes played. He shot just over 40 percent from three-point range (38-of-94), led the team with 115 assists (3.5 per game) and averaged 7.7 points per contest. Jakubowski ranked third in the MAC in assist/turnover ratio, fourth in assists and 13th in minutes played.
Larson played in each of the team's first 18 games, starting 12 times, before an injury ended his season. He averaged almost 21 minutes per game as one of the team's top interior defenders. He ranked second on the team with 17 blocked shots despite missing the final 15 games and was highly efficient, shooting 84.4 percent from the free-throw line.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in both athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and have participated in 50 percent of the team's contests. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible.
