Falcons Announce Captains For 2009

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University football team announced its captains for the 2009 season this morning (Apr. 25). Seniors Freddie Barnes, Cody Basler, Jahmal Brown, Jimmy Scheidler and Tyler Sheehan will serve as captains for the 2009 campaign.
Barnes played in nine games last season, finishing second on the team with 40 receptions and 355 receiving yards. The Chicago Heights, Ill., native will enter 2009 with 142 career receptions, tenth-best in school history.
Basler will enter 2009 as the Falcons' starting middle linebacker after finishing his junior season with 42 tackles. The Auburn, Mich., native's best game in 2008 came at Wyoming where he was named Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week, recording six tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in one of his two starts in 2008.
Brown, who has been one of the Falcons' top tacklers in each of the last two seasons, finished third on the team in 2008 with 83 tackles. The Cleveland, Ohio, native has started each of the last 35 games, recording 225 tackles. Last season alone he had four double-figure tackle performances, including 14 tackles in a 27-17 win at No. 25 Pittsburgh.
Scheidler, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., returns for his senior campaign as one of the most productive tight ends in the MAC. Last season, his seven touchdown receptions were tops in the conference among his position. Scheidler will most be remembered for his two touchdown performance in a win at Pittsburgh to open the 2008 season. He was honored as Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week for his help in the win over the Panthers.
Sheehan will begin his third year as the Falcons' starting quarterback in 2009. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native can be found throughout the BGSU record books, ranking first in career completion percentage (.645), fourth in total plays (1,135), fifth in total yards (6,493), fourth in pass attempts (919), third in pass completions (593), fifth in passing yards (6,066) and fourth in touchdown passes (43). The Falcon signal caller has started the last 25 games for the Orange and Brown, earning MAC East Offensive Player of the Week on five different occasions in that span.
