Falcons to Compete in UK Bluegrass Invitational on Sunday

The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will compete in the UK Bluegrass Invitational beginning on April 11. The two-day event will feature 17 teams, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Competing with the Orange and Brown this week are: Akron, Austin Peay, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Dayton, Gradner-Webb, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, Miami, Morehead, Murray State, Ohio, Kentucky, Toledo, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky.
A Few Notes on Men's Golf
The Falcons are averaging as a team 299.04 through eight tournaments this season, and are in reach of setting a new school record in that mark. The current record, set by last year's squad, currently stands at 296.0.
John Powers and Matt Schneider rank in the top-10 in scoring average in the Mid-American Conference. Powers is third with a 73.14 average, while Schneider is 10th with a 74.00 average. Both Powers and Schneider are within reach of the school record for season average, held by current head coach Garry Winger (72.40) in 1994.
Freshmen Parker Hewit and Drew Preston rank 29th and 34th among the conference field. Hewit is averaging 75.50, while Preston is at 75.90. Hewit and Parker, both candidates for MAC Freshman of the Year honors, rank fifth and sixth among first-year players in the conference.
Last Time Out
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team finished 10th with a 54-hole score of 892 (307-291-294) at the Marshall Invitational this past weekend. The Falcons were just 10 strokes from recording a top five finish in a field that included a nationally ranked team.
Illinois won the event with a score of 855. Tight on their heels were Xavier (869), Ball State (869), William & Mary (880) and De Paul (882) to round out the top five. The field included a total of 16 teams.
Junior John Powers led the Orange and Brown with a score of 220. The Bowling Green, Ohio, native opened with a 75-71 on Friday and carded a 74 on Saturday afternoon. The junior finish the tournament in a tie for 20th.
Freshman Drew Preston carded a 72 on Saturday to climb into a tie for 28th. The Falcon newcomer finished with a 54-hole score of 222 (78-72-72). Fellow classmate Parker Hewit finished one stroke behind Preston, carding a 223. After opening with a 75-73 on Friday the freshman fired a 75 once again to close the tournament. He finished in a tie for 34th.
After a rough start, junior co-captain Matt Schneider rebounded nicely to finish in a tie for 48th. Schneider opened the tournament with an 8-over, 79, but played the final 36 holes just 6-over-par, carding a 227 (79-75-73).
Rounding out the Falcon competitors was Bryan Mitchell. He finished in 76th with a score of 240 (80-80-80).
