BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Hayley Wiemer and sophomore Melissa Bott were named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV softball team (May 7). Wiemer earned her third straight Academic All-District first team honor, while Bott earned her first selection being named second team in her first year of eligibility for the distinction. The Falcon due made up two of the four Mid-American Conference softball student-athletes named to the Academic All-District. BG was the only MAC school to have two athletes named to the team.
Wiemer, a Sylvania, Ohio native and secondary education major earned her third consecutive ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team selection boasting a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In all four years as a Falcon she has taken care of business on the field and in the classroom. In her senior campaign Wiemer became the second player in program history to be named first team All-MAC all four seasons and now holds the BG record for homers with 32 and is the most walked Falcon and player in MAC history with 121 base-on-balls in her career. She finished her final season leading the Falcons in slugging percentage (.651), on base percentage (.472), homers (nine), doubles (nine) and RBIs (29) despite being the most walked Falcon, player in the MAC and the 16th most walked player in the nation with 33 walks averaging 0.75 walks per game, over one-third of the BG's walks as a team. She became the new all-time BG homer run leader as she crushed two long balls against Toledo (March 28) in the Falcons MAC opener, marking her 27th and 28th career homers and the fourth time she hit two home runs in a single game, becoming the first Falcon to accomplish such a feat. In the circle, Wiemer recorded 11 wins, fanning 157 batters on strikes and only walking 35 batters in 222.2 innings of work. Earlier this season she was named a Lowe's Senior CLASS Candidate, one of the top 30 senior softball players in the nation and the only player to represent the MAC. She then went on to earn four MAC weekly honors this season, the only player to earn both Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 17) and Player of the Week (March 17 & April 28), also earning MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week (April 30).
Bott, a Dover, Ohio native and pre-middle childhood education major holds a 3.71 grade point average. As a sophomore, Bott recorded 10 hits, two homers, a double and 11 RBIs, including two multiple hit games on the season. She opened the season going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored against Bradley (Feb. 13). Bott also reached two milestones this season in the Falcons' two wins over Big Ten opponent Purdue recording her first career win in the circle against the Boilermakers (March 6) and then went on to smash her first collegiate home run against Purdue in the Falcons' homer opener (March 26).
