AKRON, Ohio - Senior Hayley Wiemer and freshman Melissa West garnered first team All-MAC honors announced today (May 7) by the conference at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. West was also named to the All-MAC Freshman team.
Wiemer is the second Falcon in program history to earn first team All-MAC honors all four seasons of her career. The only other Falcon to accomplish such a feat was Gina Rango (2003-06). West is the fourth player in program history to be named to the All-MAC Freshman team and only the second to be named first team All-MAC and to the All-MAC Freshman team in the same season. This also marks the second straight season a Falcon rookie has been named to the All-MAC Freshman team. Three of the four BG All-MAC Freshman team selections are current members of the 2009 BG softball team; West joins Wiemer (2006) and Katelynn Boso (2008) who were also named to the All-MAC Freshman squad during their rookie season.
Wiemer, a Sylvania, Ohio native was named first team All-MAC for the fourth straight season. She finished the 2009 MAC regular season leading the Falcons in slugging percentage (.691), on base percentage (.467), RBIs (16) and homers (6) despite being the most walked Falcon and player in the MAC with 20 walks averaging 0.91 walks per game in conference play alone, over one-third of the BG's walks as a team. She is also the 16th most walked player in the nation averaging 0.75 walks per game overall on the season. In the Falcons 2009 MAC opener, she broke the all-time BG career home run record as she crushed her 27th and 28th career long balls against archrival Toledo (March 28), recording her fourth two home run game of her career, becoming the first Falcon to accomplish four games with two homers. In the circle, Wiemer recorded all eight of the Falcons' MAC wins in 127.1 innings of work fanning 81 batters and only walking 15 batters averaging 0.83 walks per game, the lowest in the MAC. She is the BGSU home run record holder with 32 career long balls, which is third in the MAC record book and is the most feared player in BG and MAC history holding both records for career walks with 121. In her senior campaign Wiemer earned four MAC weekly honors and was the only player to earn both Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 17) and Player of the Week (March 17 & April 28) along with MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week (April 30). Earlier this season she was also named a Lowe's Senior CLASS Candidate, one of the top-30 senior softball players in the nation and the only player to represent the MAC.
West, a Canefield, Ohio native was one of the four freshmen named first team All-MAC and to the All-MAC Freshman team this season. She ended the MAC regular season leading the Falcons in batting average (.324), hits (24) and triples (3) averaging 0.17 per game in conference play, tied for first in the MAC and also ranked ninth in the nation in triples per game averaging 0.13 per game and 13th in nation in triples with five on the season. West is the only freshman in the MAC to be ranked in any hitting category in the nation and has been ranked consecutively for the last four weeks since April 5. She opened MAC play with a bang on a four game hitting streaking and totaled eight hits in her first seven conference games, which included her first career homer, a walk-off grand slam to sweep Toledo and going 2-for-3 against Northern Illinois with two triples and two runs scored. West ended the MAC regular season on a similar high note with a three game hitting streak, where she recorded three straight multiple hit games and totaled seven hits in three games. West is tied for fourth in the BG single season record book for triples with five on the season.
