Six Falcons Named to Phil Steele's MAC Preseason Team

A pair of Falcons are named to the third-team by Phil Steele.
Freddie Barnes, Nick Iovinelli, P.J. Mahone, Jerett Sanderson, Tyler Sheehan and Shane Steffy, six members of the Bowling Green State University football team, were named in today's Phil Steele's 2009 All-MAC Preseason Team. Barnes and Mahone earned third team honors, while Iovinelli, Sheehan and Steffy were named to the fourth team and Sanderson earned honorable mention.
Barnes played in nine games last season, finishing second on the team with 40 receptions and 355 receiving yards. The Chicago Heights, Ill., native will enter 2009 with 142 career receptions, tenth-best in school history. As a junior he recorded 82 receptions, third-best in BGSU history.
Mahone has started in each of the last 18 Falcon contests, including all 12 in 2008. He led the Falcons with 95 tackles, finished second with three interceptions and third with seven pass breakups. Mahone, who has 10 career interceptions, was named second-team All-MAC as a sophomore.
Iovinelli will be entering his third year as the Falcons' punter, earning third-team All-MAC honors last season, averaging 40.4 yards a punt. He had seven punts of over 50 yards, including a 79-yard kick versus Pittsburgh. The senior to be add 12 kicks downed inside the opponent's 20-yardline.
Sheehan will begin his third year as the Falcons' starting quarterback in 2009. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native can be found throughout the BGSU record books, ranking first in career completion percentage (.645), fourth in total plays (1,135), fifth in total yards (6,493), fourth in pass attempts (919), third in pass completions (593), fifth in passing yards (6,066) and fourth in touchdown passes (43). The Falcon signal caller has started the last 25 games for the Orange and Brown, earning MAC East Offensive Player of the Week on five different occasions in that span.
Steffy, like Sheehan, will look to begin his third year as a starter for the Orange and Brown offense. Steffy, who has started 24 of the last 25 games on the offensive line, helped the Falcon ground game average 134 yards per game in 2008.
Sanderson, the lone Falcon to earn honorable mention in this publication, started all 12 games in 2008 at linebacker, recording 68 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass breakups. His two interceptions came in wins at Wyoming and versus Kent State and had 10 tackles in a win at Akron.
