Camp Report #5; Defensive Back Preview
August 13, 2009 | Football
BGSUfalcons.com jumps back on defense and spotlights defensive back PJ Mahone and the Falcons defensive back coach, Shannon Morrison.
BGSU defensive backs will be challenged early in the 2009 season with opponents Boise State (288 ypg, 30 TD), Troy (246 ypg, 26 TD) & Missouri (330ypg, 41 TD) making a living through the air. Departed from the 2008 Falcon squad are interception leader Kenny Lewis (4) and the team's best cover cornerback, Antonio Smith. The defensive backfield is now in the hands of quiet leader and senior safety, PJ Mahone. He shares his thoughts with bgsufalcons.com after a morning practice.
PJ MAHONE INTERVIEW
In 2008, the BG defense allowed less than 200 yards passing per game, allowing opponents to average only 180.8 yards per game through the air. This includes a pair of defensive performances allowing under 100 yards, against Northern Illinois (45 passing yards) and Toledo (65 passing yards). Mahone had interceptions in both of those games.
Mahone led the Falcons in total tackles (95) and solo tackles (53) in 2008.
Mahone was second on the Falcons in interceptions with three in 2008.
Also taking the time to enlighten Falcon fans on the defensive outlook is co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, Shannon Morrison. Morrison is in his first year with the Brown and Orange and most recently coached linebackers (2005-06) and defensive backs (2007-08) for his alma mater, the Marshall Thundering Herd.
