Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball team played its home opener Friday night in the opening round of the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational, losing to Green Bay in three sets 25-18, 25-21, 25-19. Green Bay turned the match around with a strong defensive display that frustrated the Falcon hitters.
Bowling Green jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening set and looked poised to run away with the match when Green Bay turned up the intensity in the back row. The Phoenix picked up 25 digs in the opening set and took away much of the Falcons' offensive attack. Green Bay tied the score at 13-13 and took the lead for good at 15-14. The Phoenix built that lead to three at 17-14 and continued to pull away for the 25-18 win.
The second set was tight early and the Falcons closed to within one at 17-16 on a block from Shari Luther and Kaitlin Jackson but Green Bay answered by scoring four of the next five points. Bowling Green got back within two at 22-20 on an Alex Zlabis service ace but Green Bay got a kill from Carmen Leitermann coming out of a timeout and held on for the 25-21 win.
The third set was also close in the early going as a Luther kill tied the score at 10-10. Green Bay pulled away with an 8-1 run after holding on to a 14-13 lead and the Falcons were unable to put together a sustained rally.
