Falcons Tied for 15th After First Round of Great Smokies Intercollegiate

The Bowling Green State University women's golf team opened the 2009-10 season by carding a 311 in the first round of this weekend's Great Smokies Intercollegiate, held in Waynesville, NC and hosted by Western Carolina University.
Elon University is tied atop the first day leaderboard with the host Catamounts. Each scored a two-under-par 286 for the day. William and Mary is two shots back, with a 288, while Radford (299) and Charleston Southern (300) round out the top five.
Bowling Green is four shots behind 14th-place Presbyterian College (307). The Falcons are tied with the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD). High Point University sits one stroke behind the Falcons in 17th place with a first-round score of 312. A total of 23 teams are participating in this year's event.
Susannah Grunden, one of three of Bowling Green's first-year players, carded the day's highest score for the team with a two-over-par 74 (39-35). Her score is tied for 25th among the field of 120 players. Grunden is only two shots out of the top 10 and is only five shots behind the co-leaders.
Junior Lauren Glew finished the first round with a 77 (38-39) to tie for 48th place. Megan Gormley, one of two Falcon seniors, registered a third sub-80 round for Bowling Green with a 79 (35-44). Gormley was one of six players on the day to register an eagle.
Senior Hannah Lambert (81) and junior Marisa Glew (82) rounded out the first day scoring for the Falcons.
Tomorrow's second (and final) round will tee off with a shotgun start at 9:00am.
