Heavy Rain Cancels Final Round of Great Smokies Intercollegiate
September 20, 2009 | Women's Golf
Heavy rain in North Carolina has forced the cancellation of the second and final round of the 2009 Great Smokies Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Carolina University and held in Waynesville, NC.
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team finishes their first tournament of the 2009-10 season tied for 15th place with a score of 311. The Falcons tied with the Savannah College of Arts and Design and came in one stroke ahead of High Point University. Presbyterian College finished in 14th place, four strokes ahead of Bowling Green.
Host Western Carolina and Elon University were declared co-champions, each carding a two-under-par 286 in the tournament's lone round. William and Mary finished in third place with an even-par 288. Radford University (299) and Charleston Southern (300) rounded out the top five.
Individually for the Falcons, freshman Susannah Grunden notched the team's highest score in her first college tournament. Her two-over-par 74 (39-35) was good for a 25th-place tie. Junior Lauren Glew carded a 77 (38-39) to tie for 48th place, while senior Megan Gormley shot an eagle on the front nine and finished with a 79 (35-44).
Hannah Lambert (81) and Marisa Glew (82) also competed for Bowling Green.
There was a four-way tie for the individual champion of the tournament, with each scoring a three-under-par 69 for the single round. Western Carolina placed both Malin Jansson and Tiffany Schisler in the group of four. Schisler competed individually and was not part of WCU's five-player team. Elon's Tara McFadden and Caroline Sweet of William & Mary were also named co-champions.
The BGSU women's golf team will next compete on Monday, September 28th at the 36-hole Youngstown State Unviersity Invitational. Both rounds of the tournament will be played on the same day.
