Bowling Green State University head tennis coach Penny Dean has announced that seniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel are the co-captains of the 2009-10 Falcons.
Babina and Kintzel are the only seniors on the eight-player roster. Both players are ranked among the BGSU career leaders on all three lists, as both players have been mainstays in the Falcons' lineup since their arrival on campus in the fall of 2006.
Babina, a native of Glenview, Ill. (Glenbrook South H.S.), has 97 career wins to rank 22nd in school history. She has 47 singles wins, and has an even 50 doubles victories, to tie her for 20th place on both of those BGSU lists.
Babina had a total of 21 wins as a freshman, then had an overall mark of 44-16 as a sophomore before going 30-24 last year. In that sophomore season of 2007-08, she had an eye-popping 27-5 doubles record.
Kintzel, a native of Libertyville, Ill. (Libertyville H.S.), is 17th in BGSU history with a total of 113 combined career wins. She is tied for 15th in school history with a 57 singles wins, and ranks 15th in BG annals on the doubles chart, with 56 doubles wins.
Kintzel has had a total of at least 32 wins in each of her three seasons, and her career doubles record of 56-29 includes a stellar 23-4 mark during her sophomore season of 2007-08. Overall, she was 41-10 that year.
In that '07-08 season, Babina and Kintzel played doubles for much of the spring, going 15-1 overall. That mark included a 13-1 dual-match record, and a 4-0 ledger in MAC matches. In their first three seasons, the Babina/Kintzel doubles team went a combined 29-15.
The Falcons, after opening the 2009-10 season at the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 19-20), are now preparing for the Queen City Invitational, which will be held in Cincinnati this Friday through Sunday (Oct. 2-4).
