Five Falcons Named Academic All-MAC

Cody Basler, Craig Rutherford and Jimmy Scheidler, members of the Bowling Green State University football team, were named to the Mid-American Conference Academic Team for 2009, announced by the league office this afternoon (Jan. 12). Zach Akenberger and Nick Iovinalli were named honorable mention.
Basler a senior from Auburn, Mich., maintains a 3.50 grade-point average, while majoring in exercise science. He led the team with 85 tackles, added 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in his first year as a starter at linebacker. Basler earned Academic ALL-MAC honors in 2008 as well.
Craig Rutherford, the 2009 Humanitarian Award winner, maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA while majoring in secondary education. Rutherford, who was also named to the academic team in 2008, has served as the team's long snapper on field goals and extra point for the past three seasons.
Scheidler, who earned second-team All-MAC this past season, finished the year with 27 catches for 320 yards and one touchdown. His lone score came in the Humanitarian Bowl versus Idaho. Scheidler holds a 3.50 GPA while majoring in business pre-law.
Akenberger played in all 13 games this past season, serving as the team's fullback and a member of the special teams, where he had 10 tackles. Akenberger is majoring in exercise science and maintains a 3.37 GPA.
Iovinelli averaged 37.0 yards a punt in 2009, had three punts over 50 yards, forced 31 fair catches and placed 24 of his 63 punts inside the opponent's 20-yardline. Iovinelli maintains a 3.40 GPA while majoring in general business.
